2 p.m.Flash Talk: Lute and Oud
14.30 hrsConcert
Like in a melting pot, many cultures met in the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance on the Iberian Peninsula: Arabic met Jewish and Christian influences, as well as Basque, Visigothic and Celtic traditions. And they all brought their music with them! In addition to the harsh and long-lasting conflicts surrounding the Reconquista, this is the story of mutual inspiration; this diverse musical heritage is at the heart of the concert.
Two ensembles unite the musical worlds here and present a repertoire from that turbulent era. They will perform works from Spanish manuscripts from the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance as well as historical Arabic songs from the "Andalusian" repertoire. The multilingual title refers to the descent of the European lute from the Arabic oud and emphasizes cultural affinity, respect and appreciation of the shared artistic heritage.
You can hear Arabic muwashshah, Sephardic romances, al-musiqa al-andalusiyya in the Tunisian tradition and works by Safi al-Din al-Urmawi (1216-1294), Diego Pisador (1509-1557), Luys de Narváez (1500-1549) and Miguel de Fuenllana (1525-1591).
