Celebratory concert to mark the 350th anniversary of the death of the composer Johann Georg Ebeling and the hymn writer Paul Gerhardt: works from 17th century Berlin.
Berlin after the Thirty Years' War: a city in transition, a time full of ruptures. What do people need in times of war and hardship? What gives them stability? Community. Consolation. Words for suffering - and music that goes beyond that.Johann Georg Ebeling (1637 - 1676) was cantor at the Nikolaikirche in Berlin. The poet Paul Gerhardt (1607 - 1676) was a pastor here. Together they found a musical language in an era of social upheaval and religious tensions - clear, vocal, close to the human heart.
350 years later. The same church. The same questions. The works by Ebeling performed on this evening - including two rediscovered compositions - have also left their mark on the music of other composers: Johann Crüger, Jacob Hintze and even Johann Sebastian Bach. Embedded in their music, a soundscape between lamentation, consolation and hope emerges.
