Erik Satie: SocrateConcert with Wioletta Hebrowska
This chamber music evening featuring the renowned mezzo-soprano Wioletta Hebrowska focuses on Brancusi’s deep passion for music, as well as his close friendship and artistic connection with the composer Erik Satie (1866–1925). The centerpiece of this free concert is the rarely performed “symphonic drama” “Socrate” (1919). This precise and minimalist piece is considered a late masterpiece by the composer. Its text is based on three Platonic dialogues (Symposium, Phaedrus, Phaedo), which were of great importance to both Brancusi and Satie. To express his gratitude and connection to the composer and the subject matter, Brancusi created the sculpture “Socrates” (1922) a few years after the piece’s premiere; it is now in the collection of MoMA. The evening will be complemented by a selection of works by other composers—some of whom are less well-known today (Darius Milhaud, Marcel Mihalovici)—who were also part of Brancusi’s inner circle in Paris.
Free admission, limited seating, no registration required
