Danceperados of Ireland: Life, love and lore of the Irish travellers Tour

In their program “Life, Love, and Lore of the Irish Travellers,” the Danceperados turn their attention to the Irish Travellers.

The Travellers are an isolated minority with unusual customs and rituals. Many people recognize them from historical films, where they are shown traveling through the countryside on horseback and in covered wagons. Superstition and family honor play a major role in their lives, as do dance and music. Some of Ireland’s greatest musicians and dancers were or are “Travelers.” Had the Irish nomads not held fast to their traditions even in times when their subculture was viewed as backward, Irish folk music might well have disappeared from the scene.
