The Travellers are an isolated minority with unusual customs and rituals. Many people recognize them from historical films, where they are shown traveling through the countryside on horseback and in covered wagons. Superstition and family honor play a major role in their lives, as do dance and music. Some of Ireland’s greatest musicians and dancers were or are “Travelers.” Had the Irish nomads not held fast to their traditions even in times when their subculture was viewed as backward, Irish folk music might well have disappeared from the scene.
