25 years of town twinning: Wegner visits Windhoek

Kai Wegner

Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner

Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner is visiting Namibia's capital Windhoek from today (Wednesday, October 15, 2025).

The reason for the four-day trip is the 25th anniversary of the twinning of the two municipalities. According to the Senate Chancellery, the CDU politician will be accompanied by representatives from Berlin's business and cultural scene.

Meeting with Windhoek Mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja

The program includes a meeting with Windhoek Mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja, a visit to a school and a speech by Wegner to students at the University of Namibia. Wegner will also take part in the world premiere of the musical theater "People of Song", which will be performed by artists from both countries and will also be shown at the Humboldt Forum Berlin in November.

Wegner emphasizes "historical responsibility"

Wegner explained on his trip that he wanted to strengthen and deepen the city partnership with Windhoek. "Both cities are linked by a wide range of cooperation in the areas of culture, education, business, research, sport and the promotion of democracy - but also by our historical responsibility in commemorating the German colonial era." In the colony of German South West Africa, now known as Namibia, soldiers of the German Empire brutally crushed resistance by the Herero and Nama from 1904 to 1905. Tens of thousands of people were killed. Historians see this as genocide.
