The Berlin Senate has taken a further step towards creating a new residential quarter in the district of Lichtenberg.
Around 580 apartments are to be built there in the Fennpfuhl district, as State Secretary for Construction Alexander Slotty explained after the most recent meeting of the black-red Senate. The draft development plan was approved at the meeting.
The Hohenschönhauser Straße - Weißenseer Weg residential quarter, which will be home to around 1,000 people in the future, will also include a new elementary school, gymnasium and sports field. The tallest building in the new quarter will have 16 storeys, the first six of which will be used for commercial purposes and the rest for apartments. There are also plans for a garage of at least four storeys as well as accommodation for students and trainees. Existing tennis courts in the planning area and the clubhouse of a nearby allotment garden are to be retained, as Slotty said.
The apartments will be built by the state-owned company Howoge. Construction is due to start in the fourth quarter of 2026. According to Slotty, a construction period of three years is considered realistic. Half of the apartments are to be subsidized as social housing. The draft development plan will now go to the House of Representatives. If it passes, construction is set to begin in 2026. The black-red Senate wants to promote the construction of new apartments in Berlin as a whole. However, it has not yet achieved its self-imposed target of an average of 20,000 new apartments per year.
