This year, 160 infections with the Mpox virus have already been reported in Berlin. That is more than in the two previous years combined, according to the latest weekly report from the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso). According to the report, there were a total of 68 cases in 2024 and 87 infections in 2023.

Since July, there has reportedly been a decline in the number of cases reported each week, with zero to four infections per week. Most recently, however, nine Mpox cases were reported to the Lageso - significantly more than in the previous weeks. Only men between the ages of 20 and 60 were affected. Of the men already identified, five had been vaccinated against Mpox.

Vaccination recommendation for certain groups of people

Mpox is a viral disease. It is transmitted through close physical contact, for example during sex. The virus mainly causes a skin rash, but also fever and muscle pain. Vaccination against Mpox is recommended for certain groups of people in Germany. These include men who have sex with men and frequently change partners. Two doses are required for basic immunization.
