World Liberty Congress: Around 200 dissidents to come to Berlin

Berlin House of Representatives

The Berlin House of Representatives is hosting the World Liberty Congress this year.

Around 200 dissidents from over 50 autocratically governed countries around the world will be coming to the German capital on November 8 and 9, as announced by the House of Representatives. To kick off Berlin Freedom Week, they want to discuss freedom, democracy and human rights in the state parliament.

President of the House of Representatives: Berlin bears special responsibility

"We welcome the World Liberty Congress in a place that stands for the democratic new beginning of Germany like no other and embodies the ruptures and changes in German history," said the President of the House of Representatives, Cornelia Seibeld (CDU). As a cosmopolitan metropolis where many people from exile and democracy movements find refuge, Berlin bears a special responsibility. "I am therefore delighted that we are able to host this international network."

Berlin as a reminder of the power of solidarity

The President of the World Liberty Congress, Masih Alinejad, added that the strength of the World Liberty Congress lies in the voices of its members. "And in the sacrifices they make - all the brave men and women who endure imprisonment and exile and whose lives are threatened because they dare to make demands for freedom." "In Berlin, we will stand together, not just as exiles, but as representatives of the millions of others who are condemned to silence by authoritarian regimes," she said. "Berlin reminds us that walls can fall and that solidarity can survive any dictatorship." According to its own information, the World Liberty Congress is a global network founded in November 2022 that is committed to the fight for democracy worldwide.
