Clean air and noise action plan: Abolition of several 30 km/h zones

Tempo 50

On 23 of Berlin's main roads, the speed limit will soon be 50 km/h instead of 30 during the day.

The Berlin Senate decided to update the clean air plan, as announced by the Senate Chancellery.

Justification for speed limits has been dropped

In order to improve air quality and comply with European pollutant limits, a 30 km/h speed limit was imposed on 41 sections of main roads during the day a few years ago. As the goal of cleaner air has now been achieved on a number of roads, the speed limit can no longer be justified on this basis, argues Transport Senator Ute Bonde (CDU).

30 km/h at night on 16 roads

Nevertheless, 30 km/h will not be introduced on all 41 roads. On 7 stretches, the speed limit remains in place for reasons of air pollution control, because limit values are still exceeded here. On 11 other sections, the limit remains in place for road safety reasons, for example because there are retirement homes or daycare centers along the roads. This leaves 23 road sections where a speed limit of 50 km/h now applies again during the day. The Senate also ordered a 30 km/h speed limit on a number of main roads at night - between 10 pm and 6 am. This decision was taken for reasons of noise and therefore health protection and, according to earlier information, affects roads with a total length of 230 kilometers.
