According to a survey, Berlin's bathing waters are all of “excellent” quality. Even inner-city bathing spots such as the Plötzensee, Halensee and Weißensee open-air pools impressed with their water quality, according to a water quality map published by the European Environment Agency EEA in Copenhagen on Friday.
The same also applies to Wannsee and Müggelsee. The current results are based on data from 2024, meaning that Berlin's water quality is above the average for Germany as a whole. 90.5 percent of the almost 2,300 bathing waters examined in this country had excellent water quality, which was a slight improvement on the previous year. This time, Germany achieved the eighth best overall score of the 29 participating countries.
EEA is looking at the contamination of water with faecal bacteria, which can lead to stomach upsets, diarrhoea or infections in humans, for example. This involves intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli, which mainly originate from wastewater and agriculture.
