Phone Service Warns Seniors About Extreme Weather

With a new weather service, the Silbernetz association aims to better protect older people in Berlin from the effects of extreme weather. Through an information hotline, users are automatically notified when the German Weather Service (DWD) issues warnings about heat, storms, or black ice. “Extreme weather conditions can be particularly stressful for older people and those living alone,” explained Silbernetz director Kerstin Winkler. The goal is to provide early warning and organize concrete assistance.

The service is particularly well-suited for people without internet access, said Silbernetz spokesperson Amira Mahdi. Older adults can sign up for the service by phone and can also call 030-544 533 0 533 to receive advice on how to stay safe, such as protecting themselves from the heat, finding cool places to stay, or storing medications safely. If needed, Silbernetz also arranges practical assistance from volunteers, such as help with shopping or picking up medications.

Volunteers Wanted for Weather Service at the Information Hotline

Lessons learned from a previous project in Neukölln were incorporated into the development. “We realized that there is a need for this service,” said Mahdi. Last year, the organization launched its first program in Neukölln. The organization is currently seeking additional volunteers to help expand the service. The service is free of charge and is funded by the Lotto Foundation Berlin. Registration is available via the information hotline.
