The Berlin actor and entertainer Harald Juhnke is to be honored with a square on Kurfürstendamm 20 years after his death. The CDU, Green, SPD and FDP parliamentary groups in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district parliament are campaigning for this.

In a joint urgent motion to the district council, they are campaigning for the square on the corner of Kurfürstendamm/Uhlandstraße/Grolmanstraße to be named after Juhnke. The square is a much frequented meeting point for passers-by and a prominent location in the heart of the district, just a few steps away from the Ku'damm stages where Juhnke made numerous appearances, according to the reasoning behind the proposal, which was submitted to the German Press Agency.

"Naming would do justice to his life's work"

"As the 20th anniversary of Harald Juhnke's death is coming up on April 1, 2025, this is a particularly worthy occasion to honor his memory," argue the district deputies. "An appropriate naming would do justice to his life's work and pay fitting tribute to his memory in Berlin, the city of his heart."

Juhnke died at the age of 75

Juhnke is still regarded as one of Germany's greatest entertainers. He was born in 1929 in the Charlottenburg Municipal Women's Hospital. For around five decades, he was one of the most influential figures in the entertainment industry in theater and German television. He was closely associated with West Berlin, where he enjoyed success at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm, among others. After persistent alcohol problems, he developed severe dementia and died on April 1, 2005 at the age of 75 and was buried in the Waldfriedhof Dahlem.
