The plans for a new residential quarter at the former Köpenick goods station in south-east Berlin are one step closer.
The Senate has adopted a corresponding framework plan for the urban development of the project in the Treptow-Köpenick district. It is the basis, for example, for drawing up development plans, as Senator for Building and Housing Christian Gaebler (SPD) explained after the Senate meeting.
The site and the adjoining areas are to be developed into a residential and commercial location with 1,800 residential units. Two school locations are also planned. According to Gaebler, construction of the first 150 apartments is set to begin in the fall of 2025. After that, things will progress step by step, with the final construction phase planned from 2032.
The former Köpenick goods station is one of the major residential construction focuses in Berlin, said Gaebler. "In the coming years, an innovative residential quarter will be built here that will be largely climate-neutral and car-free." It will be well connected to local public transport. According to Gaebler, community facilities such as daycare centers and a primary and community school are also planned. The topping-out ceremony for the elementary school is due to take place this year.
