Several dozen police officers are going door to door along Kielufer and Weigandufer to evacuate residents.
On Wednesday, an aerial bomb from World War II was discovered during construction work on the Weigandufer in Berlin-Neukölln. A cordoned-off area was set up for the bomb disposal operation.
According to the Traffic Information Center (VIZ), the area between Teupitzer Straße and Treptower Straße has been cordoned off over a wide radius. According to media reports, the bomb is expected to be defused today.
The bomb was found around 10:40 a.m. during sewer work in the Neukölln Shipping Canal, the spokesperson said. The busy Sonnenallee is just a few blocks away. The explosive device, weighing about 100 kilograms, was then brought to the shore, where it is now being defused. The bomb is currently being examined by forensic experts.
According to the spokesperson, the operation could last well into the night. Evacuating a cordoned-off area typically takes many hours because emergency responders must ensure that all residents have actually left the area. Transportation for people with limited mobility—including those requiring stretcher or wheelchair transport—must also be organized.
In connection with the planned defusing of the aerial bomb in Berlin-Neukölln, the district has set up an emergency shelter with about 200 beds. According to the police, it is located at the Adolf-Reichwein-Schule. Access is available via Böhmische Straße 20.
