More than 40 percent of Berlin households now have access to the capital's fiber optic network. This applies to a total of 884,000 households and businesses, according to the economic administration. The proportion of fiber optic coverage has thus risen to 40.8 percent. In the previous year, it was 34 percent.

All 2.2 million households in Berlin are to be connected by 2028. Access means that the fiber optic network has been laid to the respective property in these households. In addition to state funds, the economic administration has also raised federal funds to increase the speed of expansion, said Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey (SPD). "We are launching a new 20-million-euro funding program to also open up places that are not economically worthwhile for the expanding companies."

Berlin achieves full 5G coverage ahead of schedule

Elsewhere, Berlin is already on target with its gigabit strategy: "We have already achieved the 100 percent 5G mobile coverage originally planned for 2025 by 2024," said Giffey. The supply of gigabit-capable internet connections rose to around 96 percent in 2024. This puts Berlin in a top position compared to the rest of Germany.
