Senate plans measures against queer hostility

This Tuesday, the Berlin Senate discussed the development of a statewide strategy for queer safety and against queer hostility.

The concept introduced by Senator Cansel Kızıltepe has an initial run time of two years. It aims to involve both state institutions and civil society in order to develop effective measures to protect queer people in Berlin.

Focus on intersectional targets and measures

In view of the increasing number of crimes against LGBTQ people in Berlin, a round table under the motto "protection against queer-hostile hate crime" will be set up and chaired by the Senate's Queer Berlin Liaison Officer. Senator Kızıltepe emphasized the urgency of the project: "Violence against queer people is unfortunately an everyday phenomenon in Berlin. The aim of the state strategy is therefore to develop intersectional objectives and measures based on the uniquely well-positioned infrastructure to combat queer hostility in Berlin."

Growing number of anti-queer crimes in Berlin

The rising number of anti-queer crimes in Berlin primarily affects city areas with visible LGBTQIA community life. Lesbian, bisexual and queer women are increasingly affected. Male victims are particularly affected by violent crimes. According to civil organizations and the current Berlin monitoring report, trans, inter and non-binary people are also highly affected.
