Underground line 3 in south-west Berlin is being extended. On Tuesday, the Senate decided to close the public transport gap between the Krumme Lanke U3 terminus and the Mexikoplatz S-Bahn station.
This was announced by Transport Senator Manja Schreiner (CDU). According to her, the underground line, which is only around 800 metres long, is to be built underground beneath Argentinische Allee. The new underground station is to be built to the south of Mexikoplatz in order to preserve the square itself as a garden monument.
According to Schreiner, the Senate has commissioned Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) with further planning steps and the realisation of the project. She is confident that the ground-breaking ceremony will take place before the end of this legislative period, which runs until 2026. According to Schreiner, the line could be opened around 2030 or 2031 and she put the costs at 103 million euros. The senator hopes that the federal government will cover up to 75 per cent of this.
