High water quality at most Berlin bathing areas

Schlachtensee

Wannsee, Müggelsee and other bathing spots are open for swimming again: At the start of the season, the water quality is very good in most places, according to the authorities.

Almost all of the 39 outdoor bathing spots in the capital have been classified as "suitable for bathing" after initial examinations, the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso) announced on Monday. Until mid-September, water samples will be taken at the bathing sites every two weeks and examined in the laboratory for certain intestinal bacteria. In addition, the levels of algae will be closely monitored.

Heavy rain can lead to water quality impairments

Before heading to the lake or river, swimmers can check the local water quality online first. Results from forecasts are also sometimes included in the assessment. While large and popular bathing spots such as the Wannsee lido were given a green light on Monday, several bathing spots on the Lower Havel were given a yellow light, which means "bathing not recommended." According to the State Office for Health, the assessment can change in a short time. Heavy rainfall had already led to water quality problems at the Lower Havel in previous years: Rainwater mixed with wastewater can then flow directly from the sewage system into bodies of water.
