Starting at the end of April, three Berlin street sections will be transformed into so-called summer streets.
As the Senate Department for the Environment announced on Monday, different forms of the summer street are being tested. The locations are in Schöneberg, Mitte and Charlottenburg. With street furniture and plant containers, the summer streets are to become places to linger.
In the Steinmetzkiez, a 30-metre-long car-free area is being built in the northern section of Steinmetzstraße. Schöneberg's summer street will be opened on April 29 with a small street party.
In Ackerstraße in Mitte, car traffic will be directed to a narrowed lane on an approximately 50-metre-long section at the level of the Bergstraße playground.
North of Schillerstraße, the Wilmersdorfer Straße pedestrian zone will be extended by 75 metres. Even after the completion of the Summer Street project in autumn, the section will remain a permanent part of the pedestrian zone.
