The Berlin House of Representatives has decided to split the Berlin Regional Court (Landgericht Berlin).
From 2024, all criminal cases will be concentrated at Landgericht I and all civil cases at Landgericht II. In a statement, Berlin's Senator for Justice Lena Kreck called the decision a correct and important step from which Berliners would benefit. They would get an even more accessible justice system.
"This division significantly improves the possibility of realizing clear administrative structures, local decision-making and independent responsibility for resources," Kreck said. "The end result is greater judicial effectiveness due to the smaller units of action."
With more than 400 judges and around 800 employees, Berlin has the largest regional court in Germany, according to the judiciary. It is currently spread over three locations. The new Landgericht I is to operate at the Moabit site, and Landgericht II at the location on Tegeler Weg and Littenstrasse.
