The Berliner Stadtmission (Berlin City Mission) is looking for volunteers to help Ukrainian refugees in the Welcome Hall at the main railway station.
"While all shifts were quickly filled in the beginning, we are now urgently lacking volunteers," said Jens-Martin Krieg, head of the Welcome Tent, according to a statement.
The Stadtmission looks after refugees in the 600 square metre tent at Berlin's central station. Volunteers provide the people from Ukraine with food and drink, distribute hygiene articles and help them fill out applications and forms.
In addition to the 40 employees of the Berliner Stadtmission, volunteers are indispensable: "We need an extra 100 people a day to keep things running smoothly," said Barbara Breuer, spokesperson for the Berliner Stadtmission. Every day, between 2,000 and 3,000 people seeking protection still come to the refugee centre. The Berlin Senate has also commissioned the City Mission to continue operating the Welcome Hall until 31 August.
