Avian flu detected in wild bird in Berlin

For the first time this season, a case of avian influenza has been detected in a wild bird.

Possible measures are being examined

This was announced by the Senate on Thursday (Jan. 27, 2022). The affected bird was a seagull that was found dead last week at the Rummelsburg Bay. The confirmed detection of the virus subtype H5N1 was made on Wednesday by the national reference laboratory at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute. Veterinary authorities are currently considering whether certain measures will follow. The last avian influenza case in Berlin occurred in the winter of 2020/21.

Avoid contact with wild birds and report sick animals

Waterfowl, ravens and birds of prey are particularly affected by the avian flz. Songbirds and pigeons, on the other hand, are considered less susceptible. The Senate Department recommends to abstain from touching sick or dead birds and from collecting feathers. Anyone who finds dead waterfowl, ravens or birds of prey should contact the respective veterinary office.
