In light of the high temperatures, the Environmental Administration is reminding the public of the smoking ban in Berlin's forests.
The dry conditions of the past few days are leading to a continued high risk of wildfires, according to a press release from the Senate Department for the Environment and Climate Action.
"Our forests are not only important recreational areas and habitats for people and nature, but also particularly sensitive ecosystems that deserve protection," said Environment Senator Ute Bonde (CDU). "Those seeking recreation can help preserve them by behaving respectfully and responsibly."
Barbecues and smoking are prohibited in Berlin’s forests year-round. The Berlin Forestry Department also asks that you immediately report any smoke or fires by calling the emergency number 112, park vehicles only in designated parking lots, and keep emergency access routes and forest entrances clear. In addition, visitors should stay on the trails, keep dogs on a leash and not leave any trash behind.
For Thursday, the German Weather Service has classified the wildfire risk for Berlin as "moderate" (level 3 out of 5) at all stations. Wildfires are almost always caused by human activity. According to the Berlin Forestry Department, it is generally three to five degrees cooler in the forests than outside them. The canopy reduces evaporation. On hot days, forest playgrounds and forest lakes are popular destinations.
