Avian flu: call to report dead and sick birds

Due to the increasing number of cases of avian influenza in Germany, the Senate Department for the Environment, Urban Mobility, Consumer Protection and Climate Action has put forth recommendations for action.

Do not touch sick or dead birds

As the Senate Department announced on Monday (January 10, 2022), more cases have been occurring in Europe and Germany since October 2021. Berlin's neighboring state of Brandenburg is also affected. Waterfowl, ravens and birds of prey are particularly affected while songbirds and pigeons are considered less susceptible. The Senate Department urges people not to touch sick or dead birds and not to collect feathers. Anyone who finds dead waterfowl, ravens or birds of prey should contact the respective veterinary office.

Avoid contact with wild birds

Hobby farmers and poultry keepers should pay particular attention to signs of disease such as weakness and unwillingness to feed. In addition, contact with wild birds should be urgently avoided. Feed and litter should also be inaccessible to wild birds. In case of suspicious deaths, veterinary advice should be sought immediately.
