Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to play a greater role in Berlin’s schools. According to the education authorities, teachers can now use an AI chatbot called AIS.chat, which has been developed specifically for educational purposes.

Via the Berlin school portal, they have access to a data protection-compliant AI application for use in everyday school life and in the classroom. With AIS.chat, teachers can, among other things, create teaching materials, prepare lessons, analyse texts and use customisable AI assistants. They can also create so-called learning scenarios and dialogue partners and easily share them with pupils via a link or QR code.

The chatbot was developed specifically for educational use

According to the education authorities, learning scenarios enable pupils to engage with learning content in an interactive and independent manner. So-called dialogue partners are designed to simulate conversations with historical or fictional figures and open up new ways of approaching lesson topics.

AI skills should be developed from an early age

"The use of artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly integral part of everyday school life and the reality of young people’s lives," explained Katharina Günther-Wünsch (CDU), Senator for Education. "That is why it is important for pupils and teachers to be able to learn and practise using AI in a thoughtful and responsible manner from an early stage." The AIS.chat application strengthens digital education whilst providing practical support for teachers in their day-to-day school work.
