Berlin is also taking the next step in the race to host the Olympics. At the Rotes Rathaus, the city’s civic society presented the Senate with a citizens’ charter for the bid to host the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Summer Games, which includes ten recommendations for action.

"I support Berlin's bid for the Olympics because this process has shown that the entire city stands to gain from the Games if we get people on board from the very beginning," said Christian Krüger of the Citizens' Forum.

"The Olympic and Paralympic Games can be a real driving force for our city's development"

The statement clearly demonstrates how strongly Berliners support the Olympic and Paralympic Games, said Governing Mayor Kai Wegner. "Their ideas and commitment make it clear that the Olympic and Paralympic Games can be a real driving force for our city’s development - in sports, mobility, culture, urban planning and also for our social cohesion," said the CDU politician.

Ten recommendations for action in Citizens' Charter

The ten recommendations for action include, among other things, strengthening volunteer work and community sports, providing sports and exercise opportunities close to home and promoting sustainable and accessible mobility. Other points include affordable housing, climate-resilient urban development, the integration of the local economy, a citywide cultural program and the active participation of young people. The Citizens' Charter is the result of various opportunities for Berliners to get involved. These included workshops, neighborhood tours in all districts, an online participation platform and the Citizens’ and Youth Forum.

Munich and North Rhine-Westphalia vote in favor of Olympics

For constitutional reasons, there is no government-initiated referendum in Berlin. However, following the citizens' initiative by the State Sports Federation (LSB) regarding Berlin’s bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the House of Representatives will vote on a resolution. A recent poll in the capital found that 60 percent support the bid. In Munich and North Rhine-Westphalia, the public has already given a clear "yes" to the Olympic projects. Hamburg will vote at the end of May. The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) plans to make the final decision on the German candidate city in September. It remains to be seen whether the DOSB will bid for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Games.
