The alliance of Berlin's three major universities will continue to receive funding under the federal and state governments' Excellence Strategy. This was announced by the Science Council this evening. The Berlin University Alliance (BUA), which includes the FU, Humboldt University, the Technical University, and Charité University Medicine, has been evaluated positively.
The federal and state governments will provide millions in funding to a total of nine so-called universities of excellence and the Berlin Excellence Network for a further seven years from January 1, 2027. According to the Science Council, the decision was made on the basis of an evaluation by a committee of scientists and was then unanimously approved by the federal and state ministers of science.
Czyborra: "A strong signal for Berlin as a center of science"
"The decision by the expert panel of the Excellence Strategy strengthens Berlin as a center of higher education and science and will enable cutting-edge research in and from Berlin in the coming years," commented Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU). Senator for Science Ina Czyborra (SPD) added that the second positive evaluation by the Excellence Commission confirmed the path Berlin had taken. "This is a strong signal for Berlin as a center of science." The Berlin University Alliance was the first excellence network in Germany and has been funded by the federal government and the state of Berlin since 2019 as part of the Excellence Strategy. It has set new standards for cooperation between universities, Czyborra said.
