Official language to be simplified with the help of AI

Online Laptop

New software will enable the Berlin administration to translate texts into simpler or more citizen-friendly language in future.

"This makes administrative actions more transparent and understandable, thereby helping to break down unnecessary barriers between authorities and citizens," explained Martina Klement, State Secretary for Digitalisation and Administrative Modernisation.

Breaking down barriers through understandable language

This is how it should work: the AI-supported programme helps to translate the websites of public authorities, as well as letters from public authorities, into "citizen-friendly administrative language". Technical terms will be avoided "unless absolutely necessary," according to the State Chancellery. The authorities want to reach people with learning difficulties by using simple language. This is characterised by "short sentences, a clear structure and the exclusive use of simple words at language levels A1 to A2," it says. The software is initially planned to be used for three years.
