The state minimum wage in Berlin will increase by more than one euro from €13.69 to €14.84 per hour on 1 January.

A year later, it will increase to €15.59. This was stipulated by the Senate in a statutory instrument, thereby implementing a resolution passed by the Berlin House of Representatives. The state minimum wage applies wherever the State of Berlin has a financial stake and can exert influence. This includes, for example, the state civil service and state-owned companies. However, it also applies to organisations that receive money from the state, such as social welfare organisations.

Around 350,000 employees to benefit

According to the social welfare administration, at least 350,000 employees subject to social insurance contributions in Berlin will benefit from an increase in the minimum wage. This corresponds to 20 percent of all employees. The Berlin state minimum wage is linked to the federal minimum wage. This will rise to €13.90 per hour on 1 January and then to €14.60 in 2027. For many people, however, this is not enough to secure their livelihood in expensive cities such as Berlin. That is why the Berlin state minimum wage is higher.

Fair pay and economic security

"This is a clear commitment to social justice, economic stability and a good life in Berlin," explained Social Affairs Senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD). Employees need fair pay and economic security. "Those who keep our city running every day deserve more than mere recognition: these people deserve respect through good pay. Wherever the Senate has a say, it must set an example for good wages."
