Passengers using public transport at Nollendorfplatz are facing difficult times: from January 12 to mid-May, the U1 and U3 lines will be interrupted due to construction work on a ceiling in the Nollendorfplatz subway station. The short U4 line will be completely shut down during this period, according to the BVG.
Only the U2, which runs above ground at Nollendorfplatz, continues to the underground station. This line takes on special significance during the construction work: it will enable many passengers who would otherwise travel on the U1 or U3 to still reach their destination.
You can switch to the U2 at Wittenbergplatz and Gleisdreieck stations. Starting in January, the U2 should be running every four minutes again. The reliability of this line should improve by the time construction starts thanks to lots of new train cars being delivered. The new JK subway model is currently only being used on the U2. In addition, the BVG is offering replacement bus services between Spichernstraße and Wittenbergplatz stations. Replacement bus services are also planned along the entire U4 line. The U4 is the shortest of Berlin's underground lines, at just under three kilometers in length. It runs from Nollendorfplatz via Viktoria-Luise-Platz and Bayerischer Platz to Innsbrucker Platz.
During the work at Nollendorfplatz underground station, the ceiling between the two lower levels is to be renovated. Because the ceiling will be opened from above, tracks will also have to be removed. Damage caused by moisture penetration has occurred in the false ceiling. Nollendorfplatz is the only underground station in Berlin where four lines converge. It is not possible to say exactly how many people will be affected by the construction work. According to the BVG, around 560,000 passengers use the four lines U1 to U4 every day. The total budget for the construction project is currently around 4.3 million euros.
