A new project aimed at teaching values is being launched in Berlin schools with particular conflicts and violence problems.
So-called value ambassadors are supposed to engage in conversation with students about topics such as family, religion, freedom, equality, love, trust, tolerance, and self-determination. The students themselves are allowed to decide on the specific topics.
As part of the project, so-called Wertelotsen (value guides) will also be trained among the students, and teachers will receive targeted training, as Senator for Education Katharina Günther-Wünsch (CDU) announced during the presentation of the project at the Friedrich Bergius School in Friedenau.
The aim is to provide pupils with more guidance, prevent conflicts, convey ideas for conflict resolution, and create a climate of mutual respect and trust in schools. According to the senator, violence and conflicts in everyday school life are a serious problem and place a strain on pupils, teachers, and parents.
The education authorities are collaborating on the project with the organization GermanDreams, which has been offering such programs nationwide for six years. In Berlin, 200 events called "values dialogues" are initially planned over a two-year period with students at around 100 secondary schools. In addition, there will be 59 training courses for 1,300 teachers.
