The Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum traces the district’s eventful history.

The unique mix of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district - the immediate coexistence of residential and commercial areas and the interweaving of diverse lifestyles, cultures, and nationalities within a very small area - can only be understood if one is familiar with the history of the neighborhood’s origins and development.

Permanent exhibitions at the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum

The permanent exhibition "History in the Making! Demolition and New Beginnings at Kottbusser Tor" takes visitors through the history of the infamous Kreuzberg neighborhood SO 36. The exhibition addresses topics such as squatting, gentrification, protest movements, underground tourism and urban development. It was designed as a participatory project and co-created between 2001 and 2003 by over 60 Kreuzberg residents.

Also on permanent display is the Gerd Schneider Museum Printing Press. The historic printing press dates back to 1928 and bears witness to Kreuzberg’s newspaper tradition. Today, it is operated and demonstrated at the museum by volunteers. In workshops, children and adults can try their hand at using the historic press.

Merger of the Friedrichshain Local History Museum and the Kreuzberg Museum

As part of the district mergers, the Friedrichshain Local History Museum and the Kreuzberg Museum were merged in 2002. The exhibits from the Friedrichshain Local History Museum were transferred to the Kreuzberg premises. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, there are regularly changing special exhibitions on various historical aspects of the district.

Multimedia Exhibition "Local Conversations - Long-Distance Conversations - Local Stories"

The Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum is also hosting a digital, participatory, and decentralized exhibition that can be experienced on visitors’ own smartphones or on multimedia devices available for loan at the museum. This allows visitors to explore various locations in the district from a historical perspective. Personal guided tours led by local residents are also part of the project.
