The Berlin Berlin Antiquities Collection is one of the world's most significant collections of ancient Greek and Roman art. It is displayed at three locations.
Berlin's extensive collection of antiquities is housed on Museum Island in the Altes Museum, the Pergamon Museum (closed until 2027) and the Neues Museum. The tour begins with statues and artifacts from ancient Greece in the Altes Museum, such as the portraits of Caesar and Cleopatra. The tour continues to the Pergamon Museum, where the focus is on ancient architecture. Among the highlights here is the magnificent Market Gate of Miletus. From ancient Greece to the Roman Empire: The Neues Museum displays ancient works of art from Cyprus and the provinces of the Roman Empire.
The origins of the Antikensammlung date back over 350 years. It evolved from the collections of the Electors of Brandenburg and the Royal House of Prussia. With a diverse range of exhibits, the collection spans from the Aegean Bronze Age to the Late Roman period. After World War II, numerous objects were taken to Russia by the Red Army. In 1958, 1.5 million works of art were returned to Berlin’s museums as part of a restitution effort by the Soviet Union.
The most famous exhibit in the Antikensammlung is the Great Altar of Pergamon (170 B.C.), which, however, is not expected to be accessible until 2027. Other highlights include the gable tiles depicting the goddess Juno Sospita (ca. 480 B.C.), the statue of the Wounded Amazon (ca. 430 B.C.), the Cypriot Offering Bearer (ca. 550 B.C.) and the statue of the Xanten Boy (late 1st century B.C.).
