In the Christian faith, Ascension Day marks the return of Jesus Christ as the Son of God to his Father in heaven. In many places, including in Berlin, Ascension Day is also celebrated as Father's Day or Men's Day.
Ascension Day is celebrated on the 40th day of the Paschal cycle, 39 days after Easter Sunday. Therefore, the holiday always falls on a Thursday. This year, Ascension Day - a public holiday in Germany - falls on May 14, 2026. In Berlin, Ascension Day or Father's Day is also used as an occasion to initiate boys and younger men into the customs and (im)moralities of masculinity at a so-called "Herrentagspartie" (men's day party).
