Berlin-Schlachtensee is a very young locality: it has only been around since 2020. It stretches around the lake of the same name and is characterized by villas, apartment buildings, a student village and lots of greenery.

The Berlin district of Schlachtensee was created in the year 2020 from parts of the existing districts Berlin-Zehlendorf and Berlin-Nikolassee. It extends north and south of the Schlachtensee lake. It is bordered by Mexikoplatz, the Wannseebahn railway line, Spanische Allee, the A 115 motorway, Fischerhüttenweg and Potsdamer Straße.

Grunewald and Schlachtensee

North of the Schlachtensee, the district is dominated by the Grunewald forest. Forest paths invite you to take a stroll, and the Fischerhütte (Fishing Hut) on the eastern shore is a great place to stop for refreshments. Schlachtensee itself is a popular swimming lake with a boat rental facility. The 7-kilometer circular path around the lake is also popular with walkers and is often used for jogging.

Villas and lots of greenery

It is still clear to see today that the Schlachtensee locality originated as a colony of villas and country houses. The stately houses, which were built at the end of the 19th century, are now mainly used as single-family homes and apartment buildings. There are particularly many of them around Mexikoplatz: the residential area was developed under the name Villenkolonie Zehlendorf-West. The houses are surrounded by small, well-kept gardens. The many trees lining the streets provide pleasant shade and fresh air.

Housing estates from the 1920s and 1930s

Simpler houses are also part of the cityscape. Between Niklasstraße and Potsdamer Chaussee is the Am Heidehof housing estate, built in the 1920s. The Schlachtensee I and II estates on Spanische Allee are further examples from this period. The naval housing estate on the southern shore of Schlachtensee was built in the late 1930s as a residential area for officers of the Nazi navy.

Studentendorf Schlachtensee

The Studentendorf Schlachtensee (Schlachtensee Student Village), built in the 1960s, is located around Wasgenstraße. Here, 27 residential buildings surround a central square. The dormitory is mainly inhabited by students enrolled at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Potsdam.
