Café & Cacao: Percussion Masterclass & Rhythmic Lab
The perfect blend – a collective exploration of rhythm, improvisation, exchange, and deep listening.
What do stories of displacement, exploitation, transformation, and reconnection sound like if these two plants could speak through music? Would it be Berlin jazz, a round of samba, or a Peruvian jarana?
In this workshop, we’ll take a short journey through the histories of coffee and cacao, using them as a starting point and inspiration to explore, try out, and play with the musical instruments from the Goethe-Institut’s International Library of Things at the Heinrich Böll Library in Pankow.
The workshop invites you to experience the concept of “anti-groove,” developed by Laura Robles. Through rhythms that have traveled across years and geographies, we’ll explore how different people can find and develop their own rhythm.
It will evolve into an open session where everyone is welcome to experiment together with sound, body, and memory.
The program also includes a tasting of the fruits of both plants—the very origins and inspiration for this gathering.
