Zukunftsmusik

A Soviet kommunalka, a communal apartment, somewhere in Siberia. Moscow is far, far away. The year is 1985, the year when everything will change. Four women – greatgrandmother, grandmother, mother and daughter – live side by side with an engineer, a married couple who work as train conductors and the karisen: who they actually are, no one can say exactly. None of them know yet how much the turning point of 11 March 1985 will change their lives – a departure into something new and unknown which will seize the entire country. The old world is coming to an end. For some it’s a liberation, for others the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century. And in between, the fates of individuals, each of whom asks themselves: what is to be done and when will the good days actually come?

Katerina Poladjan’s novel Zukunftsmusik (Future Music) will premiere in an adaptation by resident director Nurkan Erpulat – 12 years after his production of Chekhov’s Kirschgarten (The Cherry Orchard) opened the first season at the Gorki.
