At the start of 2020, the German-Palestinian journalist Alena Jabarine moved to Ramallah for three years and embarked on her search for "Palestine". What remains of her carefree memories of childhood, the summer nights in Umm Al-Fahm, Haifa and Jaffa? What’s it like to live in a country full of visible and invisible borders, for the people on one side of them and for those on the other? And what makes her hold on to her country, despite all of this? In "Der letzte Himmel" ("The Last Sky: My Search for Palestine"), Alena Jabarine tells stories from her daily life in a place that is talked about a lot, but very few people actually know. She takes us with her through the cool alleyways of Jerusalem, to packed beauty salons in Ramallah, to the rooves of the refugee camps in Bethlehem. She describes violence and humanity, loss and solidarity, patience and hope, to preserve a reality, which allows us to take a deep look into Palestinian life – the fragility of which is particularly tangible during these times.
