Maureen and Markus have been pen pals for years. While Maureen is serving a life sentence in prison, Markus is part of the Markus&Markus Theaterkollektiv. When Markus sends Maureen the theme of the monologue festival, asking if she has any thoughts on it, she replies, "That sounds absolutely fantastic." But then, suddenly, she stops responding.
The Markus&Markus Theaterkollektiv explores the question of what we as a society can want together, where consensus exists and what a common goal might be, together with a person who has not been part of society for 25 years and is serving a life sentence in prison for murder. Maureen. She is an artist herself, she paints, plays the piano, loves papaya, the blue hour, and sunsets in Minnesota. She ends each of her letters with "Take Care & Stay Safe" and was already the protagonist of the production Die Brieffreundschaft (The Pen Pal, 2021). Reflecting together on freedom and possession opens up new perspectives that shake up assumptions and self-images and shift our view of values in unexpected directions.
