Streitraum

Streitraum 2026/27 aims to bring hope back into public discourse. To do so, we first need to clarify the concept philosophically: What does hope mean? What role does hope play in religious or secular visions of society? How can alternative narratives challenge the dominant apocalyptic ones? We need to practise imagining what might be possible to hope for. So how can we reformulate democratic utopias? Which social needs and cultural longings need to be addressed, and what might a just, solidaristic, sustainable society look like? How do we want to live? How do we want to grow old? What visions are there for different forms of community, different forms of ownership, mobility, and relationships?

Why culture?
The massive threat of cuts is plunging culture in Berlin into an existential crisis. We must therefore not only explain why culture is needed, but also what it needs. How art and culture are created, what knowledge, what expertise, what time it takes. What conflicts it negotiates internally and what conflicts it negotiates externally. Which tasks it must fulfil and which it cannot fulfil. What makes it grow, what stifles it. When does culture have an emancipatory power, when does it prevent it? Which freedoms must not be touched, which impositions must be permissible?
Streitraum is a monthly discussion series that has been moderated and curated at the Schaubühne by publicist and author Carolin Emcke since 2004. Scientists, writers, politicians, artists and other public figures are invited to join the discussion. The Streitraum focuses on a new topic every season.
