Fixated on finding THE authentic Vietnamese dating experience, Nam Anh goes on Tinder dates in Hồ Chí Minh City. Swiping through backpacking English teachers, Việt Kiều gym bros and blond girlbosses, they – after a date looking up their name – are forced to confront their past as a former child star in 2000s Vietnam. What starts as a quest for intimacy turns into an attempt to make sense of an unspoken grief: the heartbreak of migrating and estrangement from a familiar home.

 

In the lecture performance “Không Sao Đâu! I’m so f*cking future!” Nam Anh Nguyễn Quốc & Quang Nguyễn-Xuân examine Việt Nam’s ascendance into the global order and the price paid for the imperial hegemony of English language. Situating the story between a US embargo-ridden past and spectacular futurity, the lecture performance reflects on the so-called “global integration of Việt Nam” since the 2000s, and the way it shapes the textures of cities, families, memories.

 

The stage weaves theatrical play, video projections, archival material into an ambivalent architecture of memory; a space where the simultaneity of the familiar and uncanny, displacement and fragile belonging, grief and optimism exists in such complicated ways, that humour and makeno seem like the only ways to move on: Không Sao Đâu! I’m so f*cking future!
