Simone and Erik consider themselves progressive. She is a successful engineer at an innovative company, he is a translator and stay-at-home dad. They are educated urbanites and will not let their relationship succumb to stereotypical roles. One day, she returns exhausted from a business trip and hands him a present. Erik refuses to accept it. Simone reproaches him for destroying every surprise. It is an inconsequential irritation that grows into a fight about the price of their shared happiness. What if she had to wait for him at home – and he went on business trips? What if employment and family work were divided up the other way around? Would it matter? A sudden death and an unexpected career openingknock all arrangements on the head and put thecouple’s ideals to the test the hard way – in the middleof the night.
In his new play, »Egal«, Marius von Mayenburg examinesthe question of how serious we really are about equality, and what price we are paying in our private lives forsociety’s failures.
MARIUS VON MAYENBURG, born in Munich, is an author and director. His plays have been translated into over 30 languages and are performed both in Germany and abroad. Since 2009, he has worked regularly as a director at the Schaubühne and the Residenztheater in Munich, the Düsseldorfer Schauspiel haus, the Schauspiel Frankfurt, the Riksteatern in Stockholm and the Nationaltheatret Oslo.
