Meret Becker and Dietmar Loeffler perform “Barbara Nachtblau” – A Chanson for Someone Who Is Absent

French singer Barbara blends moving emotion and a delicately woven world of thought into a unique musical experience.

With her clear, at times deeply dark voice and her soul-searching songs, Barbara ranks alongside Édith Piaf, Juliette Gréco, and Jacques Brel as one of the great representatives of postwar French chanson. In “Nachtblau – Chanson für eine Abwesende,” Meret Becker and Dietmar Loeffler rediscover an artist who, as a French Jew, championed reconciliation between Germany and France like almost no other. Her chanson “Göttingen” stands as perhaps the best-known musical testament to this. Through her chansons, Barbara sheds light on the darkness of the human soul, making her autobiographical experiences accessible and tangible through art that is both delicate and powerful.  Her chansons—from “Au cœur de la nuit” to “Nantes” and “La Solitude”—revolve around the archetypes of human dreams and fears, accompanied by the central theme of love and its loss.  Her themes draw on the existentialism that preceded her in France and transport it into a modern postwar world where reality and phantasmagoria merge. Meret Becker and Dietmar Loeffler reinterpret this great “unknown acquaintance” and bring her back to life in their feverish lyrics and dark melodies. With “Nachtblau – Chanson für eine Abwesende,” they pay tribute to this magnificent artist, who sang her songs in both German and French.
