For decades, Nick Cave has been regarded as one of the last great romantics of rock music—an artist who sings about pain and hope, apocalypse and redemption with equal urgency.

With the Bad Seeds, the multinational band that emerged from the ashes of The Birthday Party in 1983, Cave has created a body of work that defies simple categorization: somewhere between dark gospel, literary ballads, and explosive rock. Eighteen studio albums, countless side projects, film scores, and literary works testify to his inexhaustible productivity.

Cave became known to a wider audience in 1995 at the latest, when he sang the duet “Where the Wild Roses Grow” with Kylie Minogue—a “murder ballad” that was both morbid and poppy. But the true greatness of the Bad Seeds is revealed on stage. There, the songs unfold their full power: sometimes whispering and fragile, then again unleashed, almost violent. The audience is part of a ritual in which Cave, often with his arms outstretched at the edge of the stage, develops an almost biblical presence.
