The Art of Sight-Reading. With Leila Schayegh, violin, and Martin Zimmermann, harpsichord

Leila Schayegh – Leila Schayegh

Leila Schayegh – Leila Schayegh

This concert takes you right to the heart of the vibrant musical life at the transition from the Baroque to the Galant style. The focus is on the major cities of London, Amsterdam and Paris. Musical life in London during the 18th century was dynamic, internationally influenced and commercialised; Italian opera played a central role, whilst at the same time public concert series such as the Bach-Abel concerts were becoming established. At the same time, Amsterdam developed into a centre for music publishing and bourgeois musical culture, whilst in Paris the transition from the courtly splendour of the French Baroque style to private music-making and an Italian-influenced ‘galant’ style was taking place.

Shall it be Pietro dell’Antoni or Johann Joachim Quantz? Leila Schayegh and harpsichordist Martin Zimmermann are bringing no fewer than 45 manuscripts and printed scores, which they have previously checked only visually for completeness but have never played before. The audience is free to shape the programme themselves and is thus spoilt for choice: it is only once they are there that the listeners decide which works will be performed. This gives rise to a spontaneous, one-off programme that offers both interesting insights and entertainment regarding the selected pieces and their source material. The focus is on the impressive art of sight-reading – playing a score for the very first time off the cuff.
