Wedged somewhere between Timmy and Trump, Germany drifted safely into the summer slump, united at last by one comforting truth: animals are better people. You can always rely on animals.
Ever since the humpback whale suddenly disappeared from the German news cycle, a dangerous imbalance has emerged. The headlines filled up once again with disagreeable human beings. With my summer reading tour, I want to give a voice back to the non-human creatures and tell stories about the animals and birds that live with me and alongside me: whistling nightingales, stubbornly silent parrots, Brandenburg voles, rescue dogs from Spain, and of course our Bengal cats — a catastrophic miscalculation of modern cat breeding.
