Fragment of Memory For One Listener

Khabat Abas

A two-hour cello performance by Khabat Abas (Fellow 2026) for an individual listener.  No one listener can experience the work in its entirety. Instead, each listener encounters only five minutes: a fragment of a duration that began before their arrival and continues after their departure.  The work unfolds through time, sound, the body, material, and improvisation. Each person enters at a different moment. Something has already happened; something else is still unfolding. When they leave, the work continues without them. What they hear is shaped, perhaps, by what came before and what comes after. What remains is not necessarily the whole, but what the listener carries away. Fragment of Memory asks: What can remain from an experience that was never complete? Can we ever grasp something in its entirety? Khabat Abas is currently a DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program Music & Sound Fellow.
