Speaker: Marie Becker,Certified Conservator, Gemäldegalerie Berlin

This lecture presents the art-technological analysis, conservation, and re-stretching of a canvas painting from the late oeuvre of Karl Hagemeister (1848–1933), carried out as part of a thesis at the HfBK Dresden in 2025. It was discovered alongside another painting by Hagemeister at Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin. Both works had been stored for decades folded and rolled up together.

Following a thorough art-technological examination, one of the two paintings was unrolled and restored to a conservatorially stable condition through the consolidation of the impasto paint layer, cleaning, and the treatment of deformations and damage to the support, after which it was mounted on a new stretcher.

In addition to the practical measures, research into the provenance of the two paintings as well as comparative studies of stretcher frames and mountings of other paintings by Hagemeister were further focal points of the work.
