Pizza Talks Marinehaus meets Makkaroni Akademie

From ‘Guest Workers’ to Expats

Offene Sprechstunde mit Pizza – Offene Sprechstunde mit Pizza

Offene Sprechstunde mit Pizza – Offene Sprechstunde mit Pizza

Who is considered a migrant in Berlin – and who an expat? The terms reveal a great deal about belonging in Berlin, and about how a new cultural space such as the Marinehaus can bring people together.

Berlin is a city shaped by migration, but not all migration stories are told in the same way. On the one hand, the migration of so-called “guest workers” is closely linked to manual labour, recruitment agreements and social struggles for recognition and belonging. On the other hand, more recent migration to Berlin is often associated with mobility, the creative industries, digitalisation and a cosmopolitan lifestyle.

What distinguishes these experiences, and what connects them? How does the Berlin Museum collect stories of migration? How can we preserve the stories of the present? And what does all this mean for the future development of the Marinehaus?

These are the questions we will explore at the next “Pizza Talks Marinehaus” together with two guests.

Aurora Rodonò is a co-founder of the “Makkaroni Akademie”, curator of migration history at the Berlin Museum, and the daughter of Sicilian guest workers. Emilia Callari is a DJ who also comes from Sicily. Alongside her musical work, she brings people together around the table in her adopted home of Berlin, celebrating Sicilian cuisine and food culture through her pop-up kitchens.

The evening will be accompanied by a live graphic recording. Comic artist Burcu Türker will transform the conversation into a visual narrative as it unfolds. Emilia Callari will also play a groovy DJ set, and as always, pizza is on us, while supplies last.

The event will be held in German and English, and in Italian if needed.

Our Guests

Burcu Türker

Burcu Türker is a comic artist and illustrator. She studied Visual Communication with a focus on comics and illustration in Kassel and has been living in Berlin since 2016. Her autobiographical graphic novel “Sweet Lemons” was published by “Jaja Verlag” in 2016 and was nominated for the “Comic Book Award” of the “Berthold Leibinger Foundation”. She has received several international artist residencies and scholarships, most recently in 2023 at the “Tarabya Cultural Academy”.

Emilia Callari

Emilia Callari lives in Berlin and originally comes from Sicily. Whether behind the DJ decks, in the kitchen or at her laptop, she creates spaces and experiences that bring people together. Her sets combine rhythmic energy with a clear political stance. As a queer artist, she sees music as inherently political and founded the Sicilian FLINTA* collective “Fluidae”.

Aurora Rodonò

Aurora Rodonò is Curator of Migration History at the Berlin Museum, a founding member of the “Makkaroni Akademie”, and the daughter of Sicilian guest workers. Before joining the museum, she worked for many years in Cologne at the University of Cologne, the “Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum” and the “Academy of the Arts of the World”. From 2003 to 2006, she was a research associate on the research and exhibition project “Project Migration” (Cologne, 2005).

“Makkaroni Akademie”

The “Makkaroni Akademie” is an artistic research project on Italian migration in Cologne and Germany. It was founded by the four cultural workers and artists Rosanna D’Ortona, Francesca Magistro, Aurora Rodonò and Luisa Zanzani. Through narrative interviews and workshops, the “Makkaronis” collect and explore stories, memories and personal perspectives. They develop alternative Italian-themed events and exhibitions that challenge familiar narratives about Italy and migration.

Together with members of the Italian community and their friends, they create a multi-voiced map of arrival and everyday life in Germany. In December 2025, the “Makkaroni Akademie” presented the exhibition “Makkaroni Settanta – Esperimento Collettivo” at the “Temporary Gallery” in Cologne. In 2026, the collective received the “Cologne Culture Prize” in the category “Young Initiatives”.

Meeting point: Dialog 101 Neighborhood Store, Köpenicker Str. 101, 10179 Berlin
